Child Observations, Myths and Realities

I received a really interesting email enquiry this morning that went something like this,

'I have the Teaching Made Easy Obs App on my iPad. I am wondering how I can add the Principles and Practices to the Obs which needs to be on them.'

My response follows ...
I am wondering who told you that the Principles and Practices must be included on a Child Observation? Neither the EYLF nor the NQS prescribe how many observations are required or what format a Child Observation must take.
Why aren’t the Principles and Practices of the EYLF included on the ‘Teaching Made Easy – Child Observations’ iPad App?
It is the outcomes which refer to what you see children doing/saying/learning and therefore you record and report a child's progress against the outcomes in a Child Observation. The principles of the EYLF are essentially our beliefs as early year’s educators, for example,
through your observation you are building reciprocal relationships, showing your commitment to reflective practices as you use what you observed to plan possible next steps etc. The practices are what you do as an educator. Through the learning story that you write about the experience of the child as you observed it (the observation), you are likely to refer to aspects of your teaching practice such as your responsiveness to the child (what you said or did), how the child has learned through play and any intentional teaching you did or plan to do as a result. You can show evidence of the principles and practices of the EYLF in your service simply by choosing ‘Teaching Made Easy, Child Observations’ for continuous documentation of learning.

The National Quality Standards Professional Learning Program have identified many myths and assumptions made by educators implementing the NQS and EYLF. Following is their information regarding the Myths and Realities around Child Observations.

More Myths and Realities can be found here

If this is an issue in your service I hope this information assists you in your professional dialogue regarding Child Observations.

'How to' Tutorial for Teaching Made Easy

Well, I downloaded the most amazing app yesterday, called 'Explain Everything'. What a wonderful teaching tool. It's so cool to use that I was up 'til 2am working on the new 'How to' Tutorial for the 'Teaching Made Easy, Child Observations' iPad App. The tutorial also demonstrates a quick navigation of our Teaching Made Easy Print website and gives a little background on Teaching Made Easy, do you know when and how it all began? You'll have to watch to find out!

I look forward to uploading and sharing the tutorial with you later today. Be sure to come back and check it out.

It's a labour of love, Andrea x

Welcome to our new Teaching Made Easy Blogger Page

WELCOME!

WELCOME to our very first Teaching Made Easy blog space. I am very, very excited. This is a place to talk about 'Teaching Made Easy' resources, our NEW Child Observations iPad app, the popular 'EYLF Made Easy' programming and planning package and over 100 essential preschool/primary resources that can be downloaded on our subscription site at www.teachingmadeeasy.com.au

I will use this page to notify our subscribers and users of updates and new resources and to request your feedback and suggestions in relation to these. I have added a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for users of our 'Teaching Made Easy, Child Observations' app, I am finding this more and more necessary to save both your sanity and mine! In honesty, I am enjoying a stronger connection with many of our customers and I love the conversations and excited feedback I have received when chatting to some of you on the phone, however, writing answers to the same questions on the facebook page over and over would drive anybody a little crazy; especially when sometimes I have answered the same question further up the page on the same post!!

I will be posting a 'how to' tutorial to talk you through some basic functions of the iPad app and to provide a simple navigation tour of our website.

This blog is also a place for general discussions about current trends in education, a place to share your concerns and also to share the wonderful teaching and learning that I know occurs in your educational sites and services.

Please add your email address to be notified of new posts. I look forward to regularly 'blogging' with you all!
